With Prices and Pictures
Fast, Powerful, and Exciting

The fastest cars in the world are the super sports cars, fast, powerful, and exciting. These super sports cars, the exotic cars of the automotive world, are high performance cars, often called ultra sports cars or super cars. They come from famous companies like Ferrari, AC Cobra, Lotus, McLaren, Porsche, Maseratti, Lamborghini, Jaguar, BMW, Bugatti, Shelby and Koenigsegg.

Super sports cars are remarkable for style, performance and exclusivity. The exotic sports cars are engineered to be the fastest cars in the world for drivers with a need for speed, and come with mind-blowing styling and big price tags. In the crowded field of family sedans and SUVs, the super sports cars can really stop traffic.

A super sports car is not just about owning a fast car. Part of the appeal of a sports car is related to the demand for luxury goods, similar to the appreciation of fine Swiss watches, vintage French wine and designer clothes. The super sports cars are distinctive cars that are thrilling to drive. They are the pinnacle of engineering and design excellence. At the wheel of a super sports car, the driver gets the ultimate driving experience.

The early companies that built super sports cars were started and run by auto enthusiasts who liked to race. Their slogan was "Race on Sunday, sell on Monday," because competition and speed sold these cars. Although the cars were outstanding, the companies often ran short of working capital. Companies and brands changed ownership frequently. Those that survive in the business today are few compared to the hundreds of companies that failed.

Sports cars are recognized by their precise handling, quick acceleration, fast braking and design aesthetics. Most automotive manufacturers offer something they market as a sports car, or a sports compact, a sports sedan, a muscle car, a hot hatch. But these models don't perform like true sports cars.

When Is a Sports Car an Exotic or Super Sports Car?

Super sports cars, also called exotic sports cars, are sports cars produced in small quantities of no more than 8,000 cars a year. If the production of a model exceeds this limit, the mass-produced car is simply called a sports car. Examples of mass-produced sports cars are BMW M3 and M5 models.

Performance Features of a Super Sports Car

The typical super sports car is built for speed and handling, rather than passenger comfort and convenience. It starts with a powerful engine. It often has two doors and two seats, but some have three seats and some, called 2+2, have two additional small rear seats. It may win awards on the racetrack, like the Porsche, Ferrari and Lotus, or it may be strictly for the road, like the Lamborghini. Some models of super sports cars are not even street-legal in the United States.

The super sports cars may come with luxury interiors or may be stripped down. There are super sports cars with automatic transmission. Super sports cars are even available with four-wheel drive, like the Porsche, Lamborghini and Bugatti Veyron. A few super sports cars come with rear wheel drive and rear engine, but they are the exception. Many cars in this elite class are still hand-crafted and custom made. All have high standards of excellence.
